Is a Vertiflex™ Superion Procedure Right for Me?
Back pain is a common problem. Unfortunately, there isn’t a common, one-size-fits-all solution to find relief. That’s because pain symptoms can have numerous causes, from muscle strain to disc degeneration.
If your symptoms have developed because of spinal stenosis, an advanced treatment could help, even when other options have failed in the past.
At Glaser Pain Relief Center in Encino, California, Dr. Jeffrey Glaser and Dr. John Zheng offer numerous treatments for spinal stenosis, including the Vertiflex™ procedure from Superion™. This minimally invasive approach can provide life-changing results when conservative methods fall short.
Do you have lower back pain? Here’s when to consider the Vertiflex Superion procedure.
Spinal stenosis basics
To understand the secret of success with Vertiflex, you need to start with the root of the problem: Why spinal stenosis causes problems.
This condition develops when parts of the spine begin to narrow. When this occurs, it causes nerves in the area to become constricted, triggering several telltale symptoms. Common signs of spinal stenosis-related issues include back pain and weakness, tingling, numbness, and cramping in your legs or feet.
If these symptoms sound familiar, our team can determine if spinal stenosis is to blame and, based on our findings, whether Vertiflex Superion is right for you.
Vertiflex and spinal stenosis
Unlike other spinal stenosis treatments, the Vertiflex procedure eases spinal stenosis symptoms by increasing space in the spine. This effectively reduces pressure on constricted nerves.
The process involves inserting a small, implantable device that gently spreads vertebrae apart. Because it remains in place, it relieves pressure within the spinal canal indefinitely.
This may seem like a complex procedure requiring a lengthy recovery. However, the Vertiflex implant only requires a small incision. And, after placing the device, the incision simply requires a few dissolvable sutures or surgical glue to close it back up.
Once complete, you can also go home the same day. Best yet? You can typically expect to experience significant pain reduction within the first few days of undergoing the procedure.
What to expect from Vertiflex
We place the Vertiflex implant using minimally invasive techniques — no general anesthesia required. However, you still have to follow postsurgical care instructions to ensure the best results.
In most cases, you can resume light activity within a day or two, especially walking, which promotes blood flow and improves healing. However, it’s essential to avoid doing too much too soon, such as:
- Running or jogging
- Bending, twisting, or lifting of the back
- Swimming, tennis, golf, and racquetball
- Sexual activity
These restrictions typically last for approximately six weeks.
Our team also provides detailed instructions on caring for your incision site. Generally, you should plan on limiting excessive bathing, soaking, or scrubbing in this area for up to 14 days.
