Q & A

WHAT IS AN ENDOSCOPIC DISCECTOMY?

An endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve pain associated with herniated discs that are putting pressure on nerve roots.

It involves the use of X-ray imaging techniques, which allows Dr. Glaser to directly visualize nerves near your spinal cord while he performs the procedure. With X-ray guidance, he can repair tissue affected by herniated discs with an endoscopic discectomy.

HOW DOES AN ENDOSCOPIC DISCECTOMY WORK?

Through a very small incision, Dr. Glaser inserts a wire down to the affected nerve root. He also slips a tubular device over the wire, which allows him to use tools to access the targeted area.

Dr. Glaser inserts a small light and camera through the tube, which allows him to monitor the procedure carefully.

Using a tool called a nerve retractor, he gently moves the nerve away from the herniated disc, so that it’s not pressing on the nerve and causing you pain. Dr. Glaser then removes your herniated disc, making room for the nerve to reoccupy its place along your spine. After completing the procedure, he removes the tube and stitches the incision with one small suture.

You can leave and resume your day within a few hours of the procedure.

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FOLLOWING AN ENDOSCOPIC DISCECTOMY?

The initial and long-term results of an endoscopic discectomy are outstanding. If you have a herniated disc that’s pressing on a nerve root, this procedure can offer you tremendous pain relief. However, individual results may vary depending on a variety of factors.

This minimally invasive procedure is a much better alternative to the incessant use of pain medications that provide short-term fixes to a long-term problem.

If you’d like to learn more about this procedure and how it can relieve pain stemming from a herniated disc, call or schedule a consultation with Dr. Glaser to address your questions and concerns with him.
